CBSE Exam Pattern 2026-27
Here's the honest, short version: the core question paper structure has not changed for 2026-27. CBSE has kept the same competency-first pattern it introduced in 2024-25:
- 50% - Competency-focused questions (case-based, source-based, MCQs testing application of concepts)
- 20% - Direct multiple-choice questions
- 30% - Short and long answer (constructed response) questions

The Class 10 Two-Exam System - What's Changed
This is the single biggest shift for Class 10 students in 2026-27, so it deserves its own section rather than being buried in a table.
- Board Exam 1 - Compulsory for every Class 10 student, held between February and March.
- Board Exam 2 - Optional, limited to up to three subjects, held in May. Only students who appeared for Board Exam 1 can sit for it.
- Scoring: Whichever of the two attempts gives a higher score in a subject is the one that counts toward the final result.
- No shortcuts: Both attempts follow the identical syllabus and question pattern - Board Exam 2 is not an "easier" retest.
- Internal assessment/practicals are recorded once, before Board Exam 1, and apply to both attempts.
- Class 12 continues with a single annual board exam - this change does not apply there.
This system was first introduced for the 2025-26 session and continues unchanged into 2026-27.
CBSE Grading System
CBSE evaluates Class 10 performance using a 9-point grading scale (in addition to raw marks), alongside qualitative indicators for internal assessment. CBSE Marking Scheme
Across both Class 10 and Class 12 theory papers, the 2026-27 marks split holds at 50% competency-based, 20% MCQ, and 30% short/long answer - unchanged from the 2024-25 and 2025-26 sessions. This means students who prepared using recent sample papers don't need to relearn a new format; the priority now is depth of practice with case-based and application questions, since that's where half the marks sit.

- A single, unified Mathematics paper for Class 9 (the earlier Basic/Standard split is discontinued for this cohort)
