How to answer in the Board Exam like a Topper

It can be easily identified how toppers structure their answers by observing Class 10 Topper Answer Sheets. The explanation below will help you to understand how to write answers and what you should follow for scoring high based on the Class 10 CBSE syllabus.‍

1. Maintain clarity

Students should keep their answer sheet neat and clean. The question numbers, answers, and calculations should be clearly presented. The MCQs need to be answered clearly with the full text of the right option. For VSA, SA, and LA questions, reasons and specifics should be mentioned clearly.

2. Keep headings for each part:

Use clear and specific headings for each part of the long questions. For example, use different theory, observations, and conclusion headings for General Science explanatory questions. You can also use numbered points to highlight the observations.

3. Answer before diagrams and put labels:

As per the toppers' answer sheets for Class 10,  an answer should open with clear explanations before any diagrams. In any subject, maintain this process of first defining the processes or needed explanation, then go for the diagrams.

In diagrams, every part needs to be labelled properly. Use arrows to show progress or process in any diagram, like the diagram below.

4. Show every step:

In mathematics, a CBSE topper's answer sheet shows every equation step-by-step clearly. Students must show each step applied in the equations, such as addition, multiplication, division, or subtraction, with proper formula implementation. The final answer should be boxed clearly, and it should be explained below with proper words.

5. Underline keywords; don’t leave blank spaces:

In literature like Hindi and English, first students should learn how to open an answer with good writing. Secondly, students must learn to underline important key terms and keywords while explaining long answers. In the end, provide a reasonable verdict on the answer, as shown below. Moreover, to deal with the blank spaces on the answer sheets, draw a diagonal line after the answers.

6. Follow standard formats:

For writing letters, applications, etc., provide proper CBSE standard formal structure and format. Students should learn how to use the correct sequence of addresses, date, receiver's details, subject, salutation, and paragraphs, with a clear beginning and conclusion.

How Much Should You Write for Each Answer in the Board Exam?

The length of your answers should be written based on the allotted marks. Because excessive writing may hamper your time management, or writing small answers for every question may not justify the marking. The detailed guide below will help you maintain the proper length of your answers in the board exam 2026-27.

  • For 1-mark questions: Students must keep the answers concise. An answer should not exceed 10-15 words.
  • For 2-mark questions: If possible, try to provide at least two points and explain them briefly.
  • For 3-mark questions: Explain your answers in 3-4 lines and within 50-70 words. Additionally, add a required example to the answers (except Maths)
  • For 5-mark questions: Your answer should consist of 5-6 valid and clear points. The points need to be elaborated within 100-150 words. Provide examples and well-labelled diagrams and graphs, while maintaining quality and standard.

How to Manage Time During the Board Exam

Students need to plan their time and answer sheet to complete the question paper within the given time. It sometimes becomes hard to maintain a good pace in the exam because of different types of questions. Sometimes, students skip questions and leave answers unfinished due to rushing through the question paper.

Hence, a strategy needs to be followed while practising Class 10 subject-wise sample papers  to avoid such issues in the Board exam.

  • Utilise the initial 15 minutes: Students must utilise the initial time of 15 minutes to go through the entire question paper. It will help to identify the questions that can be easily answered and avoid skipping any questions.
  • Allocate time based on marks: Students must know how much to write and how much time should be allotted to each question.
Marks  Suggested time
1 mark 1–2 minutes
2 marks 3–4 minutes
3 marks 5–6 minutes
4 marks 7–8 minutes
5 marks 9–10 minutes

‍

  • Follow the sections: It can be seen in the class 10th topper answer sheet that students should solve the questions by dividing the sections given in the question paper.
Subject  Recommended strategy
Mathematics  Attempt the confident questions first.
Provide answers clearly with formulas, equations, and theorems.
Do not spend too much time on numericals. Instead, move to the next question.
Before revision, try to solve the unsolved numericals.
Science  Divide allotted time between Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
Explain according to marks and use pointers or headings.
Draw labelled diagrams only when required.
Organise your numericals with formulas, substitutions, and units.
Social Science  Distribute the given 3 hours among history, geography, civics, and economics.
Underline the keywords and avoid over-explaining answers.
Allot the needed time for map-based questions.
English  To avoid wasting time, try to read each passage at once.
In written tasks, follow the exact word limit.
Keep enough time for checking grammar and spelling.
Hindi Manage time effectively in the reading, writing, and grammar section.
Maintain the word limit with the required writing formats.

‍

  • Do not get stuck: In the examination hall, getting stuck means wasting time. It can create a problem of skipping questions. So, if you cannot recall an answer or solve a numerical immediately, leave some space and move ahead to an easier one. Later, return, and if you have time on your hands, try to solve them.
  • Revision: Students must complete the whole question paper before the last 15 minutes. The last 15 minutes should be used to check possible errors, grammar, equations, diagrams and their labels, and explanations. It will help avoid any possible errors in the question paper.
