Key Highlights of the Webinar

  • Understanding Gender Beyond Biology: Mr. Sanyal clarified the difference between sex (biological) and gender (a social construct), helping teachers identify how societal perceptions shape stereotypes and inequalities.
  • Interactive Engagement: Educators participated in reflective activities and watched impactful short films like Kid’s Understanding of Gender Roles and Tamanna that exposed the roots of gender bias.
  • Real-World Context: The discussion connected classroom practices with national indicators such as MMR, IMR, and USMR, underlining how gender insensitivity impacts larger societal progress.
  • Challenging Gender Role Perceptions: Teachers analyzed how stereotypes and discrimination limit opportunities, reinforcing inequity and under-utilization of human potential.
  • Practical Classroom Takeaways: The session provided actionable strategies to build equity, respect, and inclusivity in daily teaching practices.

The CPD Training Webinar on Gender Sensitivity: Building Respectful and Inclusive Classrooms proved to be an engaging and thought-provoking three-hour session led by Mr. Moloy Sanyal, Director of the Department of Personnel & Training. A total of 152 educators attended, reflecting the growing demand for professional development on inclusive practices.

From the very beginning, Mr. Sanyal emphasized the need to differentiate between sex and gender, noting that while sex is a biological fact, gender is shaped by cultural and social expectations. He illustrated how this misunderstanding often leads to bias, restricting opportunities for students and reinforcing harmful stereotypes.

Through interactive activities and short films, participants reflected on their own perceptions of gender roles and explored how these perceptions can translate into classroom discrimination. Teachers were encouraged to recognize and challenge unconscious biases, making space for equity in both teaching and student engagement.

A critical aspect of the session was connecting classroom gender sensitivity to larger societal indicators. By examining data from India’s maternal mortality rate (MMR), infant mortality rate (IMR), and under-five mortality rate (USMR), educators gained a deeper understanding of how insensitivity at micro levels leads to systemic inequities.

Teachers left with practical strategies to foster inclusive classrooms ensuring that schools not only impart knowledge but also build environments of respect, safety, and empowerment. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from educators highlighted that the training was not just theoretical but deeply relevant to the realities of modern classrooms.
