Question:
An electric lamp of 100 Ω, a toaster of resistance 50 Ω, and a water filter of resistance 500 Ω are connected in parallel to a 220 V source. What is the resistance of an electric iron connected to the same source that takes as much current as all three appliances, and what is the current through it?
Answer:
Resistance (R1) of an electric lamp = 100Ω
Resistance (R2) of of toaster = 50Ω
Resistance (R3) of water filter = 500Ω
A potential difference of the source (V) = 220V
The resistors are connected in series.
Total resistance in electric iron
1/R= 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3
1/R = 1/100 + 1/50 + 1/500
1/R = (5+10+1)/500
R = 500/16 Ω
R = 31.25 Ω
As per Ohm's law
R = V/I
31.25 Ω = 220 V/I
I = 220 V X 100 / 3125
I = 7.04 A
Resistance is 31.25 Ω and current is 7.04 A.
