CBSE Class 9 Sanskrit Syllabus 2026–27

The syllabus is broadly divided into four major sections, each testing specific language skills. The question paper is designed to evaluate clarity of concepts and written expression.

Section A: अपठित अवबोधनम्

The unseen comprehension passage (80-100 words) tests the following language skills:

  • Identification of subject (कर्ता) and verb (क्रियापद) in sentences
  • Identifying adjective-noun pairs (विशेषण-विशेष्य)
  • Synonyms and antonyms (पर्याय-विलोमपद)
  • Replacing pronouns with nouns (सर्वनाम व संज्ञा)
  • Sentence-level comprehension and title writing

Students are expected to:

  • Identify central ideas
  • Answer factual questions
  • Demonstrate vocabulary understanding

Why this section is important: It tests real comprehension, not rote learning. With regular reading practice, this section becomes a sure-shot scoring area.

Section B: रचनात्मक कार्यम्

This section focuses on structured writing and translation skills, an area where marks are awarded generously for correct format and grammar.

  • Letter Writing (पत्रलेखनम्): Formal (औपचारिक) or Informal (अनौपचारिक) letter using hints from a मञ्जूषा (word box)
  • Picture/ Paragraph Description (चित्रवर्णनम्/ अनुच्छेदलेखनम्): Based on given hints; compose a paragraph or describe a picture
  • Dialogue/ Story Completion (संवादपूर्ति/ कथापूर्ति): Complete a dialogue or story using words from the मञ्जूषा

This section tests written expression and translation:

  1. Formal/Informal Letter Writing (पत्रलेखनम्) - 5 marks

  2. Paragraph Writing or Picture Description (अनुच्छेदलेखनम् / चित्रवर्णनम्) - 5 marks

  3. Translation (हिंदी/English to Sanskrit or Sanskrit to Hindi/English) - 5 marks

Important note: Writing tasks in Sanskrit follow fixed patterns. Once students learn standard sentence structures, they can reproduce them accurately in exams.

Section C: अनुप्रयुक्त व्याकरणम् (Applied Grammar) - 25 Marks

Grammar is the backbone of Sanskrit and this section carries significant weight. The good news is that Sanskrit grammar is rule-based and logical.

Grammar Topics Included:

Based on past trends and the 2026-27 paper design:

  • Grammar and Literature together account for nearly 70% of the theory paper. Students who master Sandhi, Shabd Roop, Dhatu Roop, and Karak rules consistently score 45-50 out of 55 in these two sections.
  • The Writing section (ख) is predictable because all tasks use मञ्जूषा hints. Students only need to place words correctly in the appropriate format.
  • The Reading section (क) requires regular practice with unseen passages. Vocabulary knowledge and grammatical awareness are key.
  • Important for 2026-27: The new addition of Samas (Tatpurusha) in the Grammar section means students must dedicate additional time to compound word formation. Translation has been dropped from Writing, saving preparation time there.

How to Prepare for CBSE Class 9 Sanskrit Effectively

These tips will help you to complete your Sanskrit syllabus Class 9 on time.

Grammar Strategy

Grammar is the single most important area to master in Sanskrit. Follow these steps:

  1. Learn Sandhi rules first. All three types (Swar, Vyanjan, Visarga) have specific rules. Make a one-page chart for each type and revise weekly.
  2. Master Shabd Roop. Practice each word pattern (बालकवत्, लतावत्, फलवत्, etc.) until you can write all the vibhaktis without looking.
  3. Practice Dhatu Roop systematically. Learn all Parasmaipadi roots in all 5 lakaras first, then Atmanepadi in 4 lakaras. Use tables for daily practice.
  4. Understand Karak rules. Focus on which Upapada takes which Vibhakti; this is a memory-based section that yields easy marks.
  5. Pratyaya and Samas; prepare all 7 pratyayas with examples. For Tatpurusha Samas, practice identifying and forming all 4 types.
  6. Avyaya and Sankhya; these carry 4 marks together. Learn the word lists topic-by-topic (location, time, question, others).

Literature Strategy

  1. Read every prose, poetry, and drama lesson from the prescribed NCERT book at least twice.
  2. Understand the meaning and context — do not memorise answers blindly.
  3. Practice Anvaya (reordering shlokas into prose order) for all poems.
  4. Learn to frame questions from underlined words (प्रश्ननिर्माणम्). Practice 5-6 different question patterns.
  5. Practise the Katha-Purti format: read the passage, identify the blank, and choose the correct मञ्जूषा word based on grammar and context.

Writing Strategy

  1. Letters: Learn the fixed format for formal and informal letters. Practice writing the opening and closing phrases from memory. All content words will be given in the मञ्जूषा.
  2. Paragraph/ Picture description: Learn standard sentence structures (subject + object + verb) for descriptive writing. Describe actions visible in a picture using simple present tense verbs.
  3. Dialogue/ Story Completion: Read the provided text carefully, understand the context, and fill blanks using the मञ्जूषा words that fit grammatically.

Unseen Comprehension Strategy

  1. Read the passage twice before answering questions.
  2. The title (शीर्षक) should reflect the central idea. It can be a single word or a short phrase.
  3. For MCQ-based language tasks, eliminate options that don't match grammatically even if you don't know the meaning.
  4. Practice 10-15 unseen passages before the exam from past papers or supplementary material.
