What is Notice Writing?
A notice is a formal written announcement issued by an individual, institution, or authority to convey important information to a targeted group of readers. Notices are usually displayed on notice boards, websites, or printed in newspapers to ensure quick and wide reach.
Notice writing is the skill of drafting such announcements in a clear, precise, and structured format. Unlike letters or articles, notices are written in a compact form - every word counts, and the message must be delivered within a limited space.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Notice WritingΒ
Even well-prepared students lose marks due to avoidable errors. The following mistakes must be avoided:
- Writing outside the box β The entire notice must remain inside the rectangular box.
- Exceeding the 50-word limit β Longer notices lose marks for poor expression.
- Missing the word "NOTICE" β This is a critical format requirement.
- Forgetting the date β The date of issue must always be clearly mentioned.
- Vague or missing subject line β A proper heading helps the reader identify the purpose instantly.
- Using informal tone or first-person pronouns β Notices are official; they must sound formal.
- Skipping the signature or designation β These are mandatory format elements.
- Grammar and spelling errors β Class 12 has a separate 1 mark dedicated to accuracy - this must not be overlooked.
- Incomplete details β Missing the 5 Ws leads to loss of content marks.
- Writing in active voice β Passive voice sounds more formal and is preferred.
The best way to avoid common mistakes is to study how notice writing questions were asked in CBSE Class 12 English Previous Year Papers and what examiners expect.
