Teachers lead their life nurturing the young minds, but how often do they actually get the opportunity to nurture themselves? Teachers’ well-being shapes everyday classroom environments.

To support teachers’ emotional well-being, Educart conducted an engaging Teachers’ Training Workshop titled “Nurturing the Nurturer: The Secret to Happy Teachers” at Apeejay School, Saket, New Delhi.

The workshop was led by Ms. Eshu Madaan, a CENTA Certified educator and Founder of Skillsphere with the session facilitated by Mr. Nishant Singh Lakra. The workshop was focused on helping teachers to pause and reflect on their own well-being so they can continue contributing to an emotionally healthy and supportive learning environment.

  • Speaker: Ms. Eshu Madaan
  • Discussion Led By: Mr. Nishant Lakra

Importance of Teacher Well-being

The workshop began with a thoughtful self-assessment activity. Here, rather than suppressing teachers' current stress and level of burnout, they were asked to evaluate their emotions and accept their emotional state.

This was the best way to start the session as this exercise helped teachers become more aware of their mental well-being. Also, it helped in forming the foundation for meaningful self-reflection throughout the session.

The discussion emphasised on an important message, a teacher who is emotionally healthy is better prepared to build positive relationships. Additionally, those educators will calmly take up the challenges, and create safe classrooms.

Exploring the PERMA Framework of Positive Psychology

Building on the reflection in introduction, participants were introduced to the PERMA Framework of Positive Psychology, a scientifically backed model for achieving personal well-being. Introduction of this concept became one of the highlights of the workshop.

Ms. Eshu Madaan explained the five pillars of the framework:

  • Positive Emotions - cultivating optimism and gratitude in everyday life
  • Engagement - becoming fully involved in meaningful work and activities
  • Relationships - building supportive personal and professional connections
  • Meaning - finding purpose in teaching beyond academic outcomes
  • Accomplishment - celebrating progress and recognising personal achievements

Teachers reflected on these five elements which contribute not only to professional satisfaction but also to long-term emotional strength.

Letting Go of Emotional Baggage

The next session explored the impact of carrying emotional baggage into the classroom. Teachers discussed how unresolved stress, difficult experiences, and unrealistic expectations can influence their interactions with students and colleagues.

After understanding the concern through discussions, some strategies were discussed to release negativity and build healthier emotional responses.

The session focused on building an emotional balance but also emphasised on the fact that it is not achieved overnight and achieved through consistent self-awareness and mindful habits.

Learning Through Shared Experiences & Daily Wellness Practice

To encourage deeper self-reflection, Ms Eshu Madaan asked teachers to sit together in a reflection circle and discuss their shared experiences, classroom challenges, and personal insights in a supportive environment.

  • Listening to colleagues facing similar situations helped participants realise that many professional struggles are shared experiences rather than personal shortcomings.
  • These discussions created a sense of community while showing the importance of peer support within schools.

Building on this sense of shared learning, the workshop focused on bringing wellness into daily practice.

  • Participants discussed simple, effective stress-management practices that support emotional well-being.
  • Emphasis was placed on stress management techniques that do not require major lifestyle changes.
  • Focus was on building sustainable daily habits.
  • The discussion highlighted helping teachers maintain balance during demanding academic schedules.

The discussion in this segment which began from the reflection circle and ended on the wellness practice emphasises on self care not being a luxury. The central message of the segment was that wellness is an important part of effective teaching.

Collaborative Learning Through Think-Pair-Share

Teachers also participated in an engaging activity called Think-Pair-Share. Here, the teachers first reflected individually followed up by idea discussion with colleagues.

This collaborative exercise encouraged participants to:

  • Exchange practical strategies for managing stress
  • Support one another in maintaining emotional well-being
  • Share approaches for balancing professional responsibilities
  • Engage in meaningful discussions on collective problem-solving

The message that was sent through the activity was the value of collaboration within the teaching community.

Reflection Towards the End

Towards the end of the workshop, participants were engaged in a reflective journal activity to help them capture their learning. Teachers recorded crucial takeaways from the session and insights for personal well-being.

They also identified actionable steps to improve their daily self-care practices. This exercise helped extend their learning beyond the workshop and encouraged them to apply these insights in their ongoing routine.

An Impactful Closing Message

The workshop concluded with a key takeaway ‘Pause before you react’. Educators were encouraged to pause, think thoughtfully and then reflect on challenging situations. This simple practice helps reduce stress and improve classroom relationships.

The core message of the entire session was that teachers’ well-being directly impacts the students’ learning. When educators keep self-care first, only then can they create an empathetic, positive and effective learning environment.
