CBSE Class 12 Comic Book English 2021

Without a doubt, CBSE keeps making efforts in favour of increasing efficiency of teachers and students. With resources like Previous Year Papers, Marking Scheme Solutions, and Sample Papers, students are able to prepare for their whole academic year smartly and understand the paper pattern in advance.

On March 24, 2021, Hon'ble Minister of Education announced the release of 100+ comic books for students of Class 3 to 12. These comics are created by teachers of CBSE affiliated schools and curated by NCERT.

However, for Class 12, only selected chapters (and in some cases even just topics of a chapter) are covered in these comic books as opposed to the complete English Core curriculum.

So, we did an in-depth analysis of the CBSE Class 12 English Core Comic Books and identified how these comic books can help in learning the concepts of the chapters clearly. We have also provided free access to the chapter-wise PDF files below. You can download them without entering any login information.

The purpose of these comics is claimed to help begin the learning process in a fun way for both teachers and students. They contain elements like Learning Outcomes and a brief Character Sketch to provide an understanding about the content of the comic book.

If these comic books are able to fulfil their purpose, they are assumed to bring an innovative shift to teaching as well as learning methods, help build strong cultural and social sensitivity in students, and add an ingenious touch to the curriculum learning practices.

With all of this in mind, we observed some Advantages and Shortfalls of reading these comic books. You can read them below and learn if they will actually help as far as the curriculum/ board exam 2022 is concerned.

Advantages

• Creative and Imaginative: Since these comics are designed with colourful illustrations (even though poor), they provide a pictorial understanding to the students about the chapter or topics covered. This allows them to visualise the concepts in a better and more fun way.
• Capturing: The content of the comic books is not that interactive but it keeps the students engaged in reading more and more as compared to the similar content of NCERT textbooks.
• Descriptive: Each real-life connection with Writing skills is described in detail so that the students are able to understand each concept and formats.
• Practice Content: Each comic book includes some questions, fun activities, and a Glossary that help the students summarise the concepts explained in the comic.

‍Shortfalls

• Distractive: These books are prescribed as supplementary study material for fun learning but some students might get distracted and spend hours reading all these mini books. Yet, they may not gain any better understanding than what NCERT textbook offers.
• Un-prescribed Questions: There are some summarising exercises at the end that will test the students’ knowledge and provide them new practice questions. But some of these questions like True/ False and Fill in the Blanks do not prepare them well for the Board examinations.‍
• Incomplete Content: There is only this one comic book available for Class 12 English Core syllabus, which is just not enough. It covers the Writing section but a Class 12 student needs lots of other things to prepare for appearing for a Board exam. Besides, it will be inconsistent for teachers to add such a resource to their teaching practice.
