CBSE Class 12 Comic Book Biology

There is never a doubt in the efforts made by CBSE about the fact that they are always in favour of increasing efficiency of teachers and students. With CBSE resources, they are able to prepare for their whole academic year smartly and understand the paper pattern in advance.

On March 24, 2021, Hon'ble Minister of Education announced the release of 100+ comic books for students of Class 3 to 12. These comics are created by teachers of CBSE affiliated schools and curated by NCERT.

However, for Class 12, only selected chapters (and in some cases even just topics of a chapter) are covered in these comic books as opposed to the complete Biology curriculum.

Fundamentally, each of these comics have Learning Outcomes, a Story Board, and Character Sketch given in the beginning. With these elements, they are to bring an innovative shift to teaching as well as learning methods. These CBSE comics are also supposed to help build strong cultural and social sensitivity in students, adding an ingenious touch to the curriculum learning practices.

We have listed some Advantages and Shortfalls of how reading these comic books will actually help as far as the curriculum/ board exam 2022 is concerned.

Advantages

• Pictorially-illustrative: These comics are creatively made and hence, they encourage the same in students. As the teachers use these resources to teach, the students are able to visualise the concepts of the topic(s) better with the help of the illustrations.
• Fun and Capturing: Although the characters are poorly stitched with standard bubble boxes talking about the concepts, the content is still more engaging than similar content of NCERT textbooks. Class 12 students may have some relief in learning the lengthy concepts in a fun way.
• Practice Content: Each comic book includes some questions, fun activities, and a Glossary that help the students summarise the concepts explained in the comic.

Shortfalls

• Distractive: These books are prescribed as supplementary study material for fun learning but some students might get distracted and spend hours reading all these mini books. Yet, they may not gain any better understanding than what NCERT textbook offers.
• Lack of Questions: There are some summarising questions to test the students’ knowledge but they are very basic and in a format that CBSE doesn’t even recommend (like match the following, crosswords). So, the teachers might not find spending quality teaching time on these books.‍
• Incomplete Content: CBSE at least must have given these books in each chapter. If the authorities want the teachers to adopt this comic book as a learning material, all chapters of Biology should have been provided. But only selected 4-5 chapters and in some cases, only some topics are covered, which would only lead to inconsistency and confusion in teaching methods.
