NCERT Releases R3 Textbooks: Hindi (Reva) & Sanskrit (Irawati) for Class 9

After the release of the R1, R2 and R3 language framework, NCERT has now released the new R3 Hindi textbook ‘Reva’ along with the new Sanskrit textbook for Class 9. This release will support schools in smooth & proper implementation of the third-language (R3) requirement under NEP 2020 and NCF 2023.

These books are developed based on the curriculum released for the third language and are developed to make learning more activity-based, competency-focused and aligned with the multilingual education.

Why Has NCERT Introduced New R3 Textbooks?

The new R3 textbooks for Class 9 have been designed and introduced as part of the CBSE’s implementation of the revised three-language policy. 

The objective is not simply to teach another language but to help students: 

• Develop multilingual communication skills 
• Appreciate india languages and culture 
• Strengthen foundational reading and writing 
• Learn through stories, activities and real-life contexts instead of rote memorisation 

The introduced textbooks will contribute to making language learning systematic and enjoyable at the same time. The books are meant to promote competency-based understanding and not to promote grammar-heavy text. 

NCERT R3 Hindi New Textbook: Reva

Reva is the newly introduced Class 9 NCERT Hindi textbook, developed for the students studying Hindi as their R3 language under the revised CBSE language framework. 

Reva introduces students to a carefully designed collection of stories and poems and combines genres to help learners build skills like vocabulary or enhance the one that they already have. 

The textbook includes:

• Poems (कविताएँ) by noted Hindi poets such as Nagarjun and Kedarnath Agarwal
• Folk tales (लोककथाएँ) that introduce students to India's storytelling traditions
• Short stories (कहानियाँ) and dialogues (वार्तालाप) that encourage contextual language learning
• Travelogues (यात्रा-वृत्तांत) and memoirs (संस्मरण) that expose students to different experiences and writing styles
• Dedicated 'केवल पढ़ने हेतु' reading sections that promote independent reading and improve language fluency without the pressure of detailed assessment

NCERT R3 Sanskrit New Textbook: Irawati 

Along with Reva, R3 NCERT Textbook for Sanskrit Class 9, Irawati also released for the students opting for Sanskrit as their third-language (R3). The textbook is curated in a manner that makes learning and understanding the language easy.

Rather than presenting grammar as isolated rules, it combines short lessons with language-building exercises so that students develop both comprehension and practical language skills simultaneously.  

The textbook comprises of 12 structured chapters covering a wide range of themes, including:

Sanskrit for R3 is not only grammar centric as it also provides a balanced approach to help students build sentence formation, vocabulary, and improve pronunciation. The idea is to gradually develop confidence in the students in reading using Sanskrit  in meaningful texts. 

Who Are These NCERT R3 Resources for?

These NCERT R3 Hindi and Sanskrit resources are for the students of the school implementing R3 language as per the revised CBSE language policy. 

The language combination may differ from school to school as it depends on multiple factors like teacher availability, regional preferences and school infrastructure. Depending on the language options provided by the school:

• Students of Class 9 studying Hindi as their R3 language will use Reva 
• Students of Class 9 choosing Sanskrit as their R3 language will study the Irawati
