3. Why are sound waves called mechanical waves?

Why are sound waves called mechanical waves?

Answer:

For the propagation of sound waves, a medium such as air, water, steel, etc. is required. It cannot move through vacuum. Sound waves can be propagated only when the particles of its medium vibrate back and forth and the disturbance moves forward. Hence sound waves are called mechanical waves.
