There’s endless information available these days - hundreds of career options, new-age career roles emerging, pressured and influential choice of careers. This creates a lot of confusion in young minds, leaving them overwhelmed. Higher academic pressure and greater uncertainty eventually give rise to mental health concerns.

After evaluating the situation, the need for structured career and emotional counseling in schools became clear.

Under the revised norms by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), it has been made significant for all the affiliated schools to appoint a career counsellor and wellness teacher, also known as socio-emotional counselor for the classes XI - XII.

With this change, counseling is no longer optional but a required part of the school support system. Under the revised guidelines, schools must appoint two professionals:

  • Counseling and Wellness Teacher (Socio-emotional Counsellor)
  • Career Counsellor

CBSE has also specified a 1:500 counsellor-to-student ratio, meaning one counsellor for every 500 students. All counsellors are required to complete a 50-hour recognised training programme under CBSE’s Capacity Building Programme to ensure uniform standards across schools.

Who is a Wellness Counsellor ?

A wellness counselor is a professional who is responsible for taking care of the wellness of the students both emotionally and mentally.

As per the CBSE norms, the counsellor and wellness will work towards providing socio-emotional learning sessions, psycho-social support and career guidance, crisis intervention and mental health concerns and provide help to both students and parents.

CBSE has also strengthened implementation through its Capacity Building Programme (CBP) framework, under which counselors are required to undergo certified training modules.

In addition, CBSE suggests a Hub and Spoke counseling Model to be adopted, where trained counselors at identified hub schools extend counseling support and guidance to nearby schools which are less resourced (Spoke) to ensure wider student coverage.

To cater learners with mental health and psychological needs, it is important that schools appoint professionals who have appropriate educational background and the skills  required to handle sensitive situations. • Bachelor’s/ Master’s in any subject + Diploma in School Counselling/ Child Guidance and Counseling)

Who is a Career Counsellor?

A career counselor is a trained professional who guides students in making informed career choices based on their interest, abilities and future goals. They create a pathway for students which help them move towards their desired career options and builds career awareness amongst them.

Why is CBSE Making This Change ?

Grades 11 and 12 are crucial academic years, as students begin making important career choices while also coping with increased academic pressure. During this stage, proper career guidance and mental health support are essential to help them make informed decisions and manage stress effectively.

Some wellness teachers also have something to say about this:
