Question:

58. What is observed after about 1 hour of adding the strips of copper and aluminium separately to ferrous sulphate solution filled in two beakers?

Name the reaction if any change in colour is noticed. Also, write chemical equation for the reactions. [CBSE 2019]

Answer:

Ans. When strips of copper are added to ferrous sulphate solution taken in a beaker, no change is observed.

On adding strips of aluminium to ferrous sulphate solution taken in another beaker, we observe that the greenish colour of ferrous sulphate solution starts fading and it becomes colourless after about an hour.

Reaction taking place is displacement reaction as iron is displaced by aluminium in ferrous sulphate solution which leads to the formation of aluminium sulphate and iron is separated out.

Equation of the reaction taking place is:

$$2\underbrace{\mathrm{Al}}_{\text{Aluminium}} + 3\underbrace{\mathrm{FeSO}_{4}}_{\text{Ferrous sulphate}} \longrightarrow 3\underbrace{\mathrm{Fe}}_{\text{Iron}} + \underbrace{\mathrm{Al}_{2}(\mathrm{SO}_{4})_{3}}_{\text{Aluminium sulphate}}$$
