Question:
Identify the substances that are oxidised and the substances which are reduced in the following reactions
(i) 4Na(s) + O2(g) → 2Na2O(s)
(ii) CuO(s) + H2(g) → Cu(s) + H2O(l)
Answer:
In reaction (i) Na is being changed from Na to Na2O so sodium is oxidised to form Na2O and oxygen is reduced.
In reaction (ii) CuO is oxidised to form Cu because oxygen is being lost from CuO. H2 gets oxidised to H2O because O2 is increasing.
