The adrenal glands make different types of hormones - some help you with day-to-day balance like metabolism and blood pressure, while others kick in during stress or emergencies. These hormones come from two parts: the outer adrenal cortex and the inner adrenal medulla.
Hormones from Adrenal Cortex (Outer Part)
- Cortisol: the “stress hormone” that manages metabolism, reduces inflammation, and helps your body deal with stress.
- Aldosterone: keeps your blood pressure stable by balancing salt and water.
- Androgens (sex hormones): small amounts that support growth, puberty, and secondary sex characteristics.
Hormones from Adrenal Medulla (Inner Part)
- Adrenaline (epinephrine): boosts heart rate, breathing, and energy during emergencies (fight-or-flight).
- Noradrenaline (norepinephrine): works with adrenaline to keep you alert and maintain blood pressure.
