Question:

Here are some reports of malpractices in Indian elections. Identify what the problem in each case is. What should be done to correct the situation?

(i) Following the announcement of the elections, the minister promised to provide financial aid to reopen the closed sugar mill.

(ii) Opposition parties alleged that their statements and campaign were not given due attention in Doordarshan and All India Radio.

(iii) An inquiry by the Election Commission showed that the electoral rolls of a state contain the name of 20 lakh fake voters.

(iv) The hoodlums of a political party were moving with guns, physically preventing supporters of other political parties to meet the voters and attacking meetings of other parties.

Answer:

(i) By promising to provide financial aid to reopen the closed sugar mill the minister broke the code of conduct. According to the election law, no minister or MLA can decide on the projects which could influence the elections. Therefore, the minister should not be allowed to contest the election.

(ii) All the contesting parties should be given equal opportunities to express their views on Doordarshan and All India Radio. This has already been done by the Election Commission.

(iii) In such case, the electoral rolls of a state should be fully revised and names of all the fake voters should be removed from the voter's list.

(iv) In this situation, malpractice is adopted by some candidates or even political parties during the elections. Such violence and terror should be banned completely. The hoodlums should be arrested and the party using them should be banned from contesting the election. The candidate must be given security by the state and needed steps should be taken.
