Explain the composition of triglyceride.

Question:

Explain the composition of triglyceride.

Answer:

A triglyceride is a type of lipid made by combining one glycerol molecule with three fatty acids.

1. Glycerol: A 3-carbon alcohol that acts as the main backbone.

2. Fatty acids: Long hydrocarbon chains attached to each carbon of glycerol. These can be this:

  • Saturated fatty acids (no double bonds, solid at room temperature like butter)
  • Unsaturated fatty acids (have double bonds, liquid like oils)

The bond that links glycerol and fatty acids is called an ester bond, formed through a dehydration reaction.

Triglycerides are the main storage form of energy in the body. They also provide insulation, help maintain body temperature, and protect organs. They are commonly found in oils, ghee, butter, dairy products, nuts, and animal fats.
