Why did various classes and groups of Indians participate in the Civil Disobedience Movement?
Answer:
Due to their individual, constrained motivations, the various classes and groups of Indians took part in the Civil Disobedience Movement.
- Businessmen understood the term "swaraj" to refer to a period when trade and industry would flourish free from colonial restraints.
- Similarly to rich peasant classes, swaraj was a struggle against high land revenue.
- Women took swaraj as the attainment of elevated status and equality with men in Indian society.
- Poor peasants looked forward to swaraj as the day they would possess their own land and no longer have to pay rent or beg.
- Working class dreamed of high wages and excellent working conditions. Hence, swaraj was different for different classes and groups of Indians.
