Why is the removal of gonads not considered a contraceptive method?

Question:

Why is the removal of gonads not considered a contraceptive method?

Answer:

Removing the gonads (ovaries in females or testes in males) does stop gamete production, so pregnancy can’t happen. But this is not seen as a proper contraceptive method at all. Contraceptives are supposed to be safe and, in most cases, reversible. Removing gonads is the exact opposite - it’s extreme, harmful, and permanent.

  • Not reversible – Once the gonads are removed, natural reproduction is gone forever. Couples can’t change their mind later.
  • Hormonal imbalance – Ovaries and testes don’t just make eggs and sperms, they also produce important hormones (like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone). Without them, the whole body balance gets disturbed → weak bones, loss of sexual characters, mood issues, and more.
  • Medical use only – This kind of surgery is only done in serious medical cases (like cancer), not for family planning.
  • Better options exist – Safer methods like condoms, IUDs, oral pills, or even sterilization (vasectomy/tubectomy) work well without such extreme side effects.
