What is aerobic respiration?

Question:

What is aerobic respiration?

Answer:

Aerobic respiration is the process where glucose (sugar) is broken down in the presence of oxygen to release energy. Also this is the main way humans and many other organisms get energy for survival. Without aerobic respiration, cells wouldn’t be able to perform basic tasks like muscle contraction, nerve signaling, or even keeping the heart beating.

Key Points

  • Requires oxygen
  • Step-by-step process → safe and efficient energy release
  • Equation: Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy (ATP)
  • Produces 36–38 ATP, which is much higher than anaerobic respiration (only 2 ATP)
