What happens to the respiratory process in a man going up a hill?

Question:

What happens to the respiratory process in a man going up a hill?

Answer:

At high altitudes, oxygen level in the air is low, so less oxygen diffuses into blood. This leads to hypoxia (oxygen deficiency) and the body responds by increasing breathing rate and heart rate. Over time, more red blood cells are produced to carry extra oxygen.
