Question:
Diffusion of gases occurs in the alveolar region only and not in the other parts of the respiratory system. Why?
Answer:
Gas exchange happens only in the alveoli because their walls are very thin and surrounded by dense capillary networks. Other parts (like trachea, bronchi) are just passageways for air and they do not have this thin membrane structure.
