How do Antibiotics Work?

Question:

How do Antibiotics Work?

Answer:

Antibiotics are medicines or chemical substances that fight against bacterial infection. It either kills or inhibits the growth of the bacteria causing infection by disrupting their cell wall, DNA replication or protein production which are essential for the bacteria to survive and multiply. By interfering with these processes, antibiotics help the body's immune system to fight the infection.

However, antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections like cold or flu as viruses have a different structure and replication process than bacteria.

Also, it is always advisable to complete the full course of antibiotics even if you start getting better. This is to avoid the relapse of the infection. Stopping early medication can allow some bacteria to survive, causing antibiotic resistance, a serious concern.

Consult your doctor and run the full course of antibiotics when you have encountered a bacterial infection.
