Prediction of whether a child will be male or female before the birth is called sex determination. The child who gets the X chromosome from the father is a girl and the child who gets the Y chromosome from the father is a boy. Father has XY but mother has only XX chromosomes. Thus the Y chromosome determines the sex of the child.
