Question:
Why do acids not show acidic behaviour in the absence of water?
Answer:
The acidic behavior of acid is due to the presence of hydrogen ions H+. In the absence of water, an acid will not show its acidic behaviour because acids do not dissociate to produce H+ (aq) ions. Water, a polar solvent assists in the dissociation of acids into their respective ions.
