Question:

What kind of ion will oxygen (O) form? [Pg. No. 174]

Answer: Verified

Oxygen has an atomic number of 8 and its electronic configuration is 2, 6. It has 6 valence electrons and needs 2 more electrons to complete its octet.

Therefore, an oxygen atom gains 2 electrons and forms a negative ion (anion) called the oxide ion.

O+2eO2O + 2e^- \rightarrow O^{2-}

Oxygen forms a divalent negative ion, O²⁻ (oxide ion).
