Question:

The variation of density of medium for a sound wave propagating with a speed of 340 ms⁻¹ is shown in the given figure. Calculate the wavelength and frequency of the sound wave.

Answer: Verified

From the figure it is concluded that, the distance between two consecutive compressions is 4 cm, which represents one wavelength.

Therefore, λ = 4 cm = 0.04 m

Speed of sound,

v=340 ms1v = 340 \text{ ms}^{-1}

Using the relation:

v=vλv = v\lambda

v=vλv = \frac{v}{\lambda}

v=3400.04v = \frac{340}{0.04}

v=8500 Hzv = 8500 \text{ Hz}

Therefore,

Wavelength = 4 cm

Frequency = 8500 Hz
