According to the law of definite proportions, a compound always consists of the same elements mixed in a defined mass ratio. This equation remains true for compounds because their elements are chemically combined in a specific proportion. For example, water always contains hydrogen and oxygen at a set mass ratio of 1 : 8.
The law does not apply to mixtures because the components are just physically combined and can exist in any proportion. For example, salt and sand or sugar and water can be mixed in various proportions without generating a new substance. As a result, mixtures lack a fixed mass composition.
