Question:

The diameter of a circle is 26 cm. A chord of length 24 cm is drawn in the circle. Find the distance from the centre of the circle to the chord.

Answer: Verified

Radius r=262=13r = \frac{26}{2} = 13 cm. Chord length = 24 cm, so half-chord = 12 cm

Using Baudhāyana–Pythagoras theorem:

d2=r2(chord2)2=132122=169144=25d^{2} = r^{2} - (\frac{\text{chord}}{2})^{2} = 13^{2} - 12^{2} = 169 - 144 = 25

Distance d=5d = 5 cm
