Question:

In a circle, a chord is 5 cm away from the centre. If the radius of the circle is 13 cm, what is the length of the chord?

Answer: Verified

Let d=5d = 5 cm (perpendicular distance),

r=13 cmr = 13 \text{ cm}

Using the chord length formula:

Chord=2(r2d2)=216925=2144=2×12=24 cm\begin{aligned} \text{Chord} &= 2\sqrt{(r^2 - d^2)} = 2\sqrt{169 - 25} \\ &= 2\sqrt{144} = 2 \times 12 = 24 \text{ cm} \end{aligned}Length of the chord = 24 cm
