You have witnessed weather phenomena, such as winds, storms, rainfall, etc. Which atmospheric layer is mainly responsible for such phenomena and what is the primary reason for its occurrence?

The atmospheric layer primarily responsible for all weather phenomena, such as winds, storms, rainfall, thunderstorms, cyclones, and other meteorological events, is the troposphere.

Characteristics of the Troposphere:

(1) It is the lowest layer of the atmosphere, extending up to about 12 km above the Earth's surface.

(2) It contains most of the atmosphere's water vapour and dust particles.

(3) Temperature decreases with increasing altitude in this layer.

The primary reason for the occurrence of weather phenomena in the troposphere is the uneven heating of the Earth's surface by the Sun. Since the Earth's surface is heated by solar radiation and in turn heats the overlying air, the troposphere is essentially heated from below. This gives rise to:

(1) Convection currents: Warm air rises while cool air sinks, leading to cloud formation and rainfall.

(2) Pressure differences: Air moves from high-pressure regions to low-pressure regions, producing winds and storms.

(3) Vertical movement of air: The decrease in temperature with height allows strong mixing of air, which is essential for weather changes.

The layer above the troposphere, that is, the stratosphere contains the ozone layer and is heated from above by ultraviolet absorption. As temperature increases with altitude in the stratosphere, vertical mixing is suppressed, which is why weather is essentially confined to the troposphere.
