Question:

What problems could arise if every scientist used different symbols for the same element? [Pg. No. 149]

Answer: Verified

If every scientist used different symbols for the same element, it would create confusion and errors in scientific communication. Chemical formulae, equations, textbooks, research papers and laboratory instructions would become difficult to understand. For example, if oxygen had different symbols in different places, the formula of water could be written in many ways, causing misunderstanding. Standard symbols given by IUPAC help scientists all over the world use the same language of chemistry, making chemical names, formulae and reactions clear and uniform.
