If photosynthesis stopped, green plants, algae and some bacteria would no longer make food from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight. As a result, food production on Earth would stop, and herbivores would soon face food shortage, followed by carnivores and other organisms. The amount of oxygen in the atmosphere would also gradually decrease because photosynthesis is a major source of oxygen. At the same time, carbon dioxide would increase because it would not be used by plants. Thus, food chains, oxygen balance and the carbon cycle would be seriously disturbed, making survival of most life forms on Earth difficult.
