If a plant cell wall became as flexible as a cell membrane, the cell would lose much of its rigidity, shape and support. It would not be able to withstand the pressure produced when water enters the cell by osmosis. As a result, the cell may swell excessively and become weak or even burst, and the plant tissues would lose strength needed to keep the plant upright.
