Question:

What conclusion did Rutherford draw about the position and characteristics of the atom's positively charged part based on the few alpha particles that bounced back or were deflected at large angles in the gold foil experiment?

Answer: Verified

In the gold foil experiment, Rutherford observed that while most α-particles passed straight through the gold foil, a few were deflected through large angles and some were bounced back. Based on these observations, Rutherford concluded that most of the space inside an atom is empty. He also concluded that the positive charge and almost the entire mass of the atom are concentrated in a very small, dense, positively charged region at the centre of the atom, called the nucleus.
