Viruses are excluded from the five-kingdom classification system because they completely lack a cellular structure, which is the basic requirement for placement into any kingdom. Unlike the organisms classified in monera, protista, fungi, plantae, or animalia, viruses do not possess a cell membrane, cytoplasm, or metabolic organelles like ribosomes. Instead, they exist as mere fragments of genetic material (either DNA or RNA) enclosed within a protective protein coat called a capsid. Furthermore, viruses lack an independent metabolism; they cannot generate their own energy or synthesise proteins. They remain completely inert and behave like inanimate chemical molecules outside of a host organism. They display characteristics such as replication and mutation only after hijacking the cellular machinery of a living host cell.
