When global temperature increases, ocean water becomes warmer and the balance of dissolved is disturbed. Warmer water holds gases less effectively, and extra atmospheric also dissolves in seawater, causing ocean acidification. This lowers the pH of seawater and makes it difficult for organisms such as corals, shellfish and some plankton to form calcium carbonate shells or skeletons. Warmer water also holds less dissolved oxygen, which can stress fish and other marine animals. As a result, marine life may show reduced growth, disturbed reproduction, coral bleaching, decline in plankton and disruption of the marine food chain.
