Suppose 7x7x is split as 2x+5x2x + 5x; can a similar rectangular arrangement be formed?

To factor x2+7x+12x^2 + 7x + 12, the middle term 7x7x must be split into two terms whose coefficients add to 77 and multiply to 1212 (the constant term).
Possible splits of 77 are:
1+61 + 6, with product 1×6=61 \times 6 = 6
2+52 + 5, with product 2×5=102 \times 5 = 10
3+43 + 4, with product 3×4=123 \times 4 = 12
Only 33 and 44 satisfy both conditions. Therefore,
x2+7x+12=x2+3x+4x+12x^2 + 7x + 12 = x^2 + 3x + 4x + 12
and the tiles can be arranged to form the rectangle (x+3)(x+4)(x + 3)(x + 4).
Thus, the correct split is 3x+4x3x + 4x because 3×4=123 \times 4 = 12, matching the constant term.
