Question:

In the lower Himalayan region of Northern India, apples are an important cash crop that contribute significantly to farmer's livelihoods. The fruit yield in apple cultivation is declining continuously, associated with climate change and a significant decline in the population of natural pollinators. A researcher-farmer group set up two experimental apple orchards at two distinct locations: Places P and Q. In apple orchards at Place P, they allowed natural pollinators to pollinate the flowers of the apple. In apple orchards at Place Q, they applied mixed farming techniques of beekeeping. Along with honey, the farmer yielded apples. The yield of apples is depicted in the given figure in terms of fruit setting (number of fruits/the total number of corresponding fruit-bearing branches) and fruit drop (premature falling of developing fruits) in the two types of experimental places of apple orchards.

(A) The researcher-farmers group likely framed the following hypotheses:
(1) Introducing managed bee colonies in apple orchards increases pollination and improves fruit set.
(2) Orchards with bee colonies show lower fruit drop because proper pollination leads to better fruit development.
(3) The decline in apple yield in the lower Himalayan region is related to the decrease in natural pollinators, and managed bee colonies can help overcome this problem.

(B) The main changed parameter is the type of pollination condition: Natural pollination at Place P and pollination with bee colonies at Place Q. The measured parameters are fruit set percentage and fruit drop percentage. Other conditions such as apple variety, orchard management, irrigation, fertilisers, pest control and observation period should ideally be kept the same.

(C) The bar graph shows that Place Q, where bee colonies were introduced, had a higher fruit set percentage and a lower fruit drop percentage as compared to Place P, which depended only on natural pollination. This indicates that managed bee colonies improved pollination and increased the overall apple yield.

(D) The data show that managed bee colonies significantly improve apple yield. Bees help in efficient cross-pollination, leading to better fertilisation, higher fruit set, and lower fruit drop. The results also suggest that the decline in natural pollinators is one of the major reasons for reduced apple production in the lower Himalayan region. Therefore, introducing bee colonies is an effective method to improve pollination and increase apple yield.
