Similarly, unicellular organisms show varied nutrition: some are autotrophic (like Chlamydomonas), others heterotrophic (like Amoeba), and some parasitic (like Plasmodium). Their modes of reproduction also differ widely, ranging from binary fission in bacteria to sexual reproduction in protists. Ecologically, they occupy distinct roles—bacteria act as decomposers, protists may be primary producers, and some unicellular fungi are important in fermentation.
