3. The cell is called the structural and functional unit of life because the body of every living organism is made up of one or more cells. A cell forms the basic structure of an organism, just like bricks form a building. It also performs all essential life processes such as nutrition, respiration, excretion, growth and reproduction. Therefore, the cell is the smallest unit that can carry out all activities necessary for life.
