Question:

During a long-term ecological study, students examined organisms collected from three different environments — a freshwater pond, damp soil near decaying logs and the digestive tract of animals. Instead of naming organisms directly, scientists recorded only structural, cellular and nutritional features as given in the table.

The students realised that some organisms fit neatly into Whittaker's five kingdom classification, while others challenged the very basis of this classification.

Based on the case study, answer the following questions —

(A) Identify one organism that clearly belongs to the Kingdom Fungi.
State one observation that supports your answer.

(B) Which organism would be placed in the Kingdom Monera? Mention one characteristic that justifies this placement.

(C) Organisms R and Q are both eukaryotic, yet they are placed in different kingdoms. Analyse the criteria that separate them.

(D) Explain why organism S cannot be classified using the mode of nutrition alone.

(E) Organism T does not fit into any of the five kingdoms. Which fundamental characteristic used in classification does it lack and what does this reveal about the limitations of classification systems?

(F) If classification were based only on habitat, which organisms might be incorrectly grouped together? Explain the scientific consequences of such a classification.

(G) Imagine scientists discover a new organism that is multicellular, eukaryotic, lacks chlorophyll and absorbs nutrients from a host externally. Should it be placed under fungi or animalia? Justify your reasoning using classification criteria.

Answer: Verified

(A) Organism Q belongs to Kingdom Fungi. It is multicellular, has a filamentous body with a cell wall, lacks chlorophyll, and grows on dead organic matter that is, exhibits saprophytic nutrition, which are characteristic features of fungi.

(B) Organism P belongs to Kingdom Monera because it lacks a true nucleus, indicating a prokaryotic cell organisation. Its ability to survive high salinity and temperature is also characteristic of archaebacteria found in extreme environments.

(C) Although both R and Q are eukaryotic, they are placed in different kingdoms because R is unicellular and shows both autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition, which are characteristic features of Kingdom Protista.

In contrast, Q is multicellular, filamentous, lacks chlorophyll, and obtains food saprophytically from dead organic matter, which are features of Kingdom Fungi.

(D) Organism S cannot be classified using mode of nutrition alone because many organisms from different kingdoms are heterotrophic. Its classification depends on structural features such as multicellularity, well-differentiated tissues, the presence of a backbone, and aquatic respiration during early life, which are characteristic features of amphibians in Kingdom Animalia.

(E) Organism T is a virus and does not fit into any of the five kingdoms because it lacks cellular organisation. It is acellular and cannot perform metabolic activities or reproduce independently outside a host cell.

Limitations of classification systems revealed:

(1) Classification systems are built on defined criteria. When an entity possesses some properties of living organisms (genetic material, replication, evolution) but lacks others (cellular structure, independent metabolism), it becomes difficult to classify.

(2) This show that the classification system are human-defined and may not perfectly represent every form of biological entity found in nature.

(3) The example of viruses demonstrates that scientific classification is not fixed and must be revised as scientific knowledge expands.

(F) If classification were based only on habitat, organisms such as R and S might be incorrectly grouped together because both are associated with aquatic environments. Similarly, organisms living inside animals or in moist environments could also be wrongly grouped despite having very different cellular structures and evolutionary relationships.

Such a classification would be scientifically inaccurate because habitat alone does not reflect fundamental biological characteristics such as cellular organisation, body structure, mode of nutrition, reproduction, or evolutionary origin. Organisms adapted to similar habitats may belong to entirely different groups due to convergent adaptations.

(G) The organism should be placed under kingdom Fungi. Although it is multicellular and eukaryotic like animals, it lacks chlorophyll and absorbs nutrients externally from a host, which is a characteristic mode of nutrition in fungi. Fungi obtain food by absorption, whereas animals ingest food and digest it inside the body.
