Question:

Draw the graph of the following equations, and identify their slopes and yy-intercepts. Also, find the coordinates of the points where these lines cut the yy-axis.
(A) y=3x+4y = -3x + 4
(B) 2y=4x+72y = 4x + 7
(C) 5y=6x105y = 6x - 10
(D) 3y=6x113y = 6x - 11
Are any of the lines parallel?

Answer: Verified

(A)

Answer image

y=3x+4;Slope=3;y-intercept=(0,4)y = -3x + 4; \text{Slope} = -3; y\text{-intercept} = (0, 4)

(B)

Answer image

2y=4x+7;Slope=2;y-intercept=(0,3.5)2y = 4x + 7; \text{Slope} = 2; y\text{-intercept} = (0, 3.5)

(C)

Answer image

5y=6x10;Slope=1.2;y-intercept=(0,2)5y = 6x - 10; \text{Slope} = 1.2; y\text{-intercept} = (0, -2)

(D)

Answer image

3y=6x11;Slope=2;y-intercept=(0,113)3y = 6x - 11; \text{Slope} = 2; y\text{-intercept} = \left(0, -\frac{11}{3}\right)

By the graph, (B)(B) and (D)(D) are parallel lines as both have slope 22.

Caution
Students should remember that two lines y=ax+by = ax + b are parallel only when their slopes aa are equal;
The value of bb does not affect whether the lines are parallel.
