A farmer wants to produce a large number of genetically identical plants quickly. Suggest suitable reproduction methods and explain why they are effective.

A farmer who wants to produce a large number of genetically identical plants quickly should use vegetative propagation methods, which are forms of asexual reproduction. Suitable methods include cutting, layering and tissue culture. Grafting can also be used to preserve the desirable characters of a plant variety.

(1) Cutting: A stem or shoot cutting from the parent plant is planted in moist soil, where it develops roots and grows into a new plant. This method is commonly used in rose, sugarcane and money plant.

(2) Grafting: A shoot from the desired plant variety, called the scion, is joined to the root system of another plant, called the rootstock. The scion retains the genetic identity of the desired variety. This method is widely used in mango, apple and grapes to preserve desirable fruit characteristics.

(3) Layering: A branch of the plant is bent towards the soil and covered with soil until roots develop. The rooted branch is then separated from the parent plant. This method is used in plants such as jasmine and lemon.

(4) Tissue culture: It is a modern technique in which small pieces of plant tissue are grown on a sterile nutrient medium under controlled conditions. It helps produce a very large number of similar plants in a short time and is commonly used for crops such as banana.

These methods are effective because they are based on asexual reproduction, which involves only one parent and mainly relies on mitotic cell division. Since mitosis produces cells with the same genetic composition as the parent, the new plants are generally genetically identical to the parent. These methods are also faster than traditional seed-based propagation because plants do not need to complete the full reproductive cycle and often begin growth from already developed plant parts.
