Question:

A farmer plants two varieties of maize side by side, but notices that seeds form only when pollen from one variety reaches the stigma of the other. What type of pollination is this? [Pg. No. 217]

Answer: Verified

Cross-pollination is the type of pollination in which pollen from the flower of one plant is transferred to the stigma of a flower on a different plant (of the same kind/species). Since the maize seeds form only when pollen from one variety reaches the stigma of the other variety, pollen is moving between two different plants — so it is cross-pollination.
