Let shorter piece be x feet.

Then, longer piece = 4x feet.

Thus, x + 4x = 300

$$\Rightarrow 5x = 300$$

$$\Rightarrow x = 60.$$

Hence, shorter piece = 60 feet and longer piece = 4(60) = 240 feet.
